In this episode of At Risk Radio, host Mark Stafford and SOM International CEO David Witt explore the fascinating story behind the Jubilee Bible with special guest Russell Stendal, the director of SOM Latin America. In part one of a three-part series, Russell shares his remarkable journey of being inspired to create the Jubilee Bible after facing a shortage of accurate and consistent translations in Colombia. Russell explains how he went back to the 1569 first complete Bible in Spanish, translated by Cassiodoro de Reina, to begin the work of editing the Jubilee Bible. This translation, now available in both Spanish and English, has made a tremendous impact, with over a million copies in print and widespread distribution in Colombia and Venezuela. 

Russell Stendal was raised by a Bible translator and grew up surrounded by the work of missions in Colombia, where his family has been for 60 years. His growing-up experience would shape his future work and mission in the region. He is part of the ongoing effort to provide Bibles for Venezuela, pressing past barriers and finding unique ways to meet needs.

Jesse grew up in a Christian home, but he led a double life filled with alcohol, drugs, and immorality. After a few arrests and threatened jail time for seven felonies in which God intervened, Jesse wanted to serve God but still followed his selfish lifestyle. God continued to pursue Jesse until he finally fully surrendered to the Lord. 

Jesse was led from bondage and brokenness to knowing his identity in Christ. He has a positive influence as a leader in missions, ministry and discipling others.

Tim, the Bible translator, spent 27 years learning the tribal language to put the Bible into written form, preserving their tribal language. Today, God’s Word is used as this tribe’s primer in learning their written language, which would have otherwise disappeared over time. 

Over 1,200 from this indigenous group traveled miles through the jungle by canoe and foot to experience a first-time-ever gathering of these indigenous believers!

What a blessing for the team to witness firsthand the fruit of the revival that has taken place over the last two years because the Bible was translated into their heart language, forever transforming lives.

One man, with a serious hearing loss, traveled far to hear Tim share the Good News. He first heard the Gospel from Tim 30 years prior and was hungry to learn what else there was to following Jesus now that the Bible had been translated accurately into his language. Not only were the translated Bibles delivered to this tribe, but Tim also delivers a 30 minute daily radio broadcast that reaches these isolated people in their own language to help them go deeper into God’s Word. 3,000 short wave radios were provided to the tribal peoples in remote areas. Riadh explains his experience with persecution when he started the first Arabic language broadcast of the Gospel from France. His media center served 25 nationalities. Riadh also describes a course he teaches: Theology of Persecution, based on Scripture. Christian leaders need to be trained in how to serve new persecuted believers so they aren't shaken and cave into pressure from family, neighbors, etc. and compromise or even go back to their former false religion. Dan Rilling is the manager at Lakeview Campground in Canada. Dan felt like God called him to build a campground and then God provided another campground, which became an opportunity for giving to others. The Lord has blessed Dan with so much more than he could ever ask or imagine. In fact, He first provided $100,000 for Dan to give to missions and then 10 years later, God has given Dan $1 million dollars to give away to others! 

He gave the proceeds from his campground to missions; specifically the Piaroa tribe so they could have a Bible in their own language. The Piaroa are an indigenous group of people who live in Venezuela and have never had the Bible translated into their language before now. He is excited about the opportunity to be a broker for missions and provide Bibles for these people who have never heard or read God's Word!

"Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. • In the Beginning God spoke to Adam and Eve. Through history the Lord has always spoken to mankind.
• Today we have the Holy Spirit and the mark of his disciples is first that they hear.

"And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions."  (Mark 12:28-34)

2Ti 2:12  if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us;

Rev 20:6  Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

• He sent them out two by two. Rarely did he do anything on his own or did the disciples do work on their own.

• Act 15:2  And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question.

Leadership is influencing others in a certain direction. Disciples influence others in the direction of righteousness.

11 The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said,

    and don’t live in dread of what frightens them.
13 Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life.
    He is the one you should fear.
He is the one who should make you tremble.
14     He will keep you safe.
But to Israel and Judah
    he will be a stone that makes people stumble,
    a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem
    he will be a trap and a snare.
15 Many will stumble and fall,
    never to rise again.
    They will be snared and captured.”

16 Preserve the teaching of God;
    entrust his instructions to those who follow me.
17 I will wait for the Lord,
    who has turned away from the descendants of Jacob.
    I will put my hope in him.

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”

16 Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching[a] among my disciples. 17 I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.

"Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”"  (Luke 24:44)

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak,"  (2 Corinthians 4:7-13)

Leaders develop effective oral communication.

If Americans are mostly oral learners what about the rest of the world? The developing world?

SOM International priority is distributing the Word of God. And the first line of offense is Orally. This is why our Church Planting Schools and Lighthouse schools around the world focus on the Oral Word of God. In Latin America we are harnessing radio as a way to communicate God’s Word.
