<itunes:summary>Perfectionism is an addiction. This addiction obstructs an awareness of “good enough”… It is a rigid way of thinking and seeing the world as polarized, dots of black and white. Life becomes a battery of tests and there are only two outcomes -pass or fail, a mishmash of fantasy and nightmare.

Vulnerability becomes the arch enemy. Perfectionism and intimacy are incompatible.
I’ve always told my clients that perfection is for plastic not people. Overtime even with a winning track record you’ll find yourself isolating, defensive, afraid you’ll be exposed as an imposter. Perfectionism is a magic trick and belongs in fairytales not real life. Perfectionism runs rampant online fueled by filters and followers. Online profiles become land mines of popularity and a sink hole for self-esteem. How do you decide what gets shared on your social media?

What are the activities that call upon the perfectionist -school, hobbies, parenting, sports relationships? What is perfectionism costing you… a shot at intimacy?

You’ve heard me share with you about my struggles with self-doubt. I believe for most entrepreneurs this is a huge challenge because there are no set standards.
How do you know if a piece is finished when the real question is is it ever finished? There’s always some aspect of my creative intention that falls short of expectation.

My compromise is treating my inner critic as a well-meaning collaborator and not a disapproving parent. I’ve noticed since taking this approach I have fewer nightmares of getting caught naked in public or frozen in place with a very hungry lion in pursuit.

I sculpted Camouflage during Covid lockdown. Vulnerability surfaced as an invisible enemy rather than my quirky sidekick. There didn’t seem to be room for all my emotions. Fear wrecked havoc with my psyche, a real coup d’état. Fortunately, I knew how to harness that energy. I used my creative license to come out of hiding. Camouflage is asymmetrical, with a lazy eye and bees in her bonnet. Nothing like a wonky self-portrait to lift my spirits and banish perfectionism!

I am good enough…and so are you. In my world, scars, ripples, wrinkles and patina are beautiful.

Are you a perfectionist?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Brené Brown is banana bread with chocolate chips. If there’s one thing I miss since going gluten-free, it is a good sweet bread. Brene’s a researcher author innovator sassy and special lady. If you haven’t seen her iconic Ted talk on vulnerability, Google and catch up.

She speaks about the courage to be vulnerable, letting go of perfectionism and it’s sticky tentacles and embracing the quirky and crazy -all the ingredients that keep the moisture in and release an avalanche of delicious. She shares her research on the ingredients of wholehearted living, inviting us to indulge without guilt or shame. Take her wholehearted inventory to reveal the places you could use some extra butter. her books help fill in the gaps with humor and insight.

On Brene’s podcast Unlocking Us she interviews singer songwriter Jake Wesley Rogers who describes his impact as dropping keys to catharsis, giving his listener a starting point to do the deeper healing work. I feel similarly about visual art. Whether you come in on the wing of a sparrow or gravitate to a void between layers of rust on an elephant’s swinging trunk, that you feel compelled to go deeper, to go beyond what you see and already know. Art does more than provide ambiance; it is capable of altering our perspective.

Like Mona Lisa who follows you with her gaze as you cross the museum floor and leaves an indelible impression, art is a mirror, peep hole and telescope to the multiverse. It reveals to the extent you can receive its wisdom and invites you to return when you are ready for more…</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It’s January. Prepare yourself for Hallmark hell. Too often Valentines is seen as a celebration of two people and their relationship. As the psychobabble tells us we have to love ourselves first. I try not to equate loving myself with liking myself every day. For me it’s a matter of self-compassion- accepting who I am and all of my imperfections. It’s knowing how to take care of myself during the hard times and keep my ego in check.

My life coaching tool chest is safely ensconced in Positive Psychology. Positive psychology’s main aim is to encourage people to discover and nurture their character strengths. The distinctions I make and exercises I share with you are relevant to every adult and child regardless of geography or gender identification.

Yin yang self-compassion is a self-care approach with two distinct aspects. yin is what we can do to comfort ourselves to self soothe and validate our feelings. In contrast yang self-compassion is associated with protecting providing and motivating.
When you think of a situation that has caused you significant distress look to answer this yin question- what is one thing that I can do to take care of my emotional needs? The active forms of self-care or yang self-compassion can be identified with this question -How can I motivate myself with kindness, support and understanding rather than criticism?

In the sculptural work Yin Yang, I used horseheads to represent the complimentary forces. Horses symbolize freedom. Self-compassion and self-care ensure resilience ie emotional freedom. Resilience gives us the emotional and mental elasticity to love without losing your identity or compromising your values. Resilience can weather loss without sacrificing trust in self. Resilience, like a good horse, always brings you back home.</itunes:summary>
