BREAKING: An alleged cyberattack involving “unauthorized activity” on Canvas -- an education platform widely used by universities and schools across the United States -- caused the site to temporarily shut down on Thursday, officials said.

The company said it confirmed that an unauthorized actor carried out the activity by “exploiting an issue related to our Free-For-Teacher accounts.”

As the Louisiana state Senate debated what the National Homelessness Law Center says is “one of the cruelest anti-homeless bills in the country,” more than 50 mainly Black unhoused people sat and lay on the sidewalk in New Orleans’ Central City neighborhood.

The bill, which already passed overwhelmingly through the state’s Republican-dominated House of Representatives, could subject unhoused people to fines, jail time, or even unpaid labor if they are found sleeping outdoors.

SPOTLIGHT: Raye Montague was only seven when she visited a submarine exhibit in her hometown of Little Rock. It sparked in her a love of engineering that would inspire her to shatter the glass ceiling of opportunity for African American women in the 1950s.

Elections & Politicians:Republican lawmakers in Tennessee approved a new U.S. House map Thursday that carves up a majority-Black district in Memphis, reshaping it to the GOP’s advantage as part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to hold on to a slim majority in the November midterm elections.

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday blocked a new Democratic-drawn congressional map from taking effect, delivering a major boost for Republicans as they defend their narrow House majority in the midterm elections.Weeks after Virginia narrowly approved the plan in a statewide vote, the court ruled that Democratic lawmakers did not meet the procedural requirements to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot, which was written to pave the way for the redrawn district lines. Democrats were seeking a map designed to give the party up to four new House seats.

Hegseth, referring to it as the "CSAR 25:17" prayer, used the adapted quote—famously delivered by Samuel L. Jackson—to describe a military rescue mission.

(Capital B) Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who was the second Black American to hold that office in the state, fatally shot his estranged wife, Cerina Fairfax, and then himself at their home, police said.

(NBC News) President Donald Trump announce that he was nominating Dr. Erica Schwartz to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Schwartz served as deputy U.S. surgeon general during Trump’s first term.  The CDC has been without a permanent director since August.

SPOTLIGHT:  On April 21, 1937, Illinois congressman Arthur Wergs Mitchell, was told to move to the section of the train designated for African American passengers, in accordance with the Arkansas Separate Coach Law of 1891.Under threat of arrest, Mitchell moved to the designated area and filed a lawsuit once he returned to Illinois.

(GAMBIT) The Louisiana House Judiciary Committee April 16 passed a bill essentially eliminating New Orleans’ clerk of criminal court just weeks before Calvin Duncan, a Black man who was wrongfully imprisoned for decades before being elected to the position last year, is set to take office.  The committee quickly passed Senate Bill 256 by Sen. Jay Morris, a Monroe Republican, on an 8-5 vote in a push to get it before Gov. Jeff Landry so that it can take effect before Duncan starts his term as criminal clerk of court on May 4.

LEAD:  Each year, the world produces more than 400 million tons of plastic—enough to fill more than a million garbage trucks—and less than 10 percent of these products are recycled. Applause erupted in the UN General Assembly Hall on Wednesday as Member States adopted a resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity. The resolution spearheaded by Ghana received 123 votes in favor. Three countries – Argentina, Israel and the United States – voted against and 52 abstained.

“No Kings” demonstrations took place across the nation today, with crowds in major cities, suburbs and small towns marching, singing, and speaking out against President Donald Trump’s policies, the rising cost of living and the war with Iran.

The Defense Department has requested $200 billion in funding to support Operation Epic Fury against Iran, but the Pentagon has yet to provide Congress much clarity on how it plans to spend that money, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said March 25.

(The Wrap) California, New York and six other attorneys general filed an emergency motion to block the recently approved Nexstar-Tegna merger. The FCC’s media bureau approved Nexstar’s $6.2 billion acquisition of rival TV station owner Tegna on Thursday.

(Capital B) Angelica Johnson is forced to recount the images and sounds of her son, Da’Quain Johnson, being attacked by a police K-9 dog and being shot three times by police last month. In the month since the Feb. 18 shooting of the 32-year-old father by Grand Rapids, Michigan, police, Johnson remains skeptical of everything the police and local media have reported about her son’s death.

Metro Atlanta is undergoing a housing crisis, which has been fueled in part by corporate investors and left unchecked by Georgia state lawmakers. Many of these lawmakers are real estate investors themselves, an investigation by Capital B and Type Investigations has found.

Atlanta has long been called the Black Mecca, and through the early 2000s, the city boasted a reputation as an affordable city with a growing and prosperous Black middle class. In recent years, however, the lack of affordable housing has pushed thousands of Black people to the margins — or out of the city entirely.

Two shutdowns of the U.S. federal government have occurred in 2026, both arising from disputes in Congress about reforms to federal immigration enforcement after the killing of Alex Pretti by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.The first shutdown lasted four days from January 31 to February 3, affecting about half of the departments of the federal government; it was caused by delays in approving a funding package that would allow time for reform negotiations. The second began on February 14 due to a lack of progress in the reform negotiations and only affects the Department of Homeland Security.

Nine Tornadoes
The Heartland is reeling after a catastrophic outbreak of tornadoes claimed at least eight lives, leaving a trail of splintered homes and shattered communities in its wake on Thursday and Friday.

"End-Times" war with Iran?
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation reports receiving more than 100 complaints from U.S. service members alleging that some commanders have framed current military operations in Iran in terms of Christian end-times prophecy, namely God’s plan for Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus.Landon Schnabel, associate professor of sociology at Cornell University who studies religion and social change, says that the use of such apocalyptic language by commanders reflects a climate shaped from the top down.

Gas is up
Gas prices surged across Southern California this week, with the statewide average climbing above $5 per gallon and some drivers encountering prices more than $8 at the pump.The national average has risen nearly 50 cents a gallon in the week since the war in Iran began, according to AAA. The organization said prices were already trending upward with typical seasonal patterns when the joint U.S.-Israel attack on Iran drove oil prices higher.

California has been found to have a depleted UI trust fund, along with $21 billion in borrowed federal funds to keep the system running, which federal officials say has led state employers to pay higher UI taxes to repay the debt.

Elections & Politics: (NPR) Fewer congressional contests are expected to be competitive this fall, compared with past election cycles, and experts say the extraordinary mid-decade redistricting efforts initiated by President Trump are largely to blame, surmised from The Cook Political Report.

(CBS News.) Longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn is facing the fight of his political life, with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Houston Rep. Wesley Hunt, both challenging him for the GOP nomination.

The most recent polling from the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs showed Paxton with 38% support, Cornyn at 31%, Hunt with 17% and 12% undecided. The Real Clear Politics average of polls between December 1 and February 3 gives Paxton a two-point lead.

If no candidate gets a majority, as is widely expected, the race will end up in a runoff on May 26th.

Black History Month Spotlight: In 2022, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's HOPE Crew (Hands-On Preservation Experience; http://www.savingplaces.org/hope-crew) program in partnership with the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (http://www.savingplaces.org/action-fund) presented a 6-month paid fellowship to students studying at three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs; http://www.savingplaces.org/hbcus ): Florida A&M University, Prairie View A&M University, and Tuskegee University. Election & Politics: (FOX News) Democratic lawmakers say President Donald Trump’s redistricting gambit is backfiring as Virginia’s Democratic-controlled Senate advanced new congressional maps that could chip away at the House GOP's majority.

(NBC News) While some state lawmakers have been able to redraw congressional maps through legislation, Virginia's constitution mandates that a bipartisan redistricting commission handles the process. After several Republican-controlled states enacted new maps, Virginia Democrats began the complicated effort of amending the constitution to allow them to respond with redrawn district lines.

(SCOTUSblog) California’s path to the enactment of its new map was slightly more complicated than in Texas. The California Legislature adopted the new map in August, but under the state constitution an independent redistricting commission – rather than the Legislature – normally has the power to redistrict. The legislation adopting the new map therefore proposed a ballot initiative, known as Proposition 50, that would amend the constitution to allow the use of the new map from 2026 through 2030. By a roughly two-to-one margin, the state’s voters approved the initiative in a special election on Nov. 4.

Breaking: The NAACP, the nation's leading civil rights organization, announced its creation of the Black Consumer Advisory, The Advisory places emphasis on Black consumers' nearly $2 trillion in spending power, promoting informed spending decisions by providing the Black community with insight into who's promoting progress, and who's living in the past.
During her February 13 Senate confirmation hearing, Trump nominee for education secretary Linda McMahon cast doubt on the future of Black history courses in American public schools, saying she’s “not quite certain” if Black history instruction would violate an executive order banning “critical race theory in the classroom." During Biden’s presidency, some right-wing media figures called for the end of Black history curriculum, with one Fox News personality calling it a “Trojan horse.”
The Alfred Street Baptist Church of Alexandria has decided to cancel its annual Christmas performance at D.C.’s Kennedy Center.
The move follows President Donald Trump’s complaints that the programming at the Kennedy Center under its past board was too “woke.” The president has since overhauled the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which voted to make him the chairman.

Breaking: The Justice Department on Monday ordered federal prosecutors to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, arguing in a remarkable departure from long-standing norms that the case was interfering with the mayor’s ability to aid the president’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Green Watch: A magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck in the western Caribbean on Saturday night, prompting a tsunami advisory for the Cayman Islands as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were cleared of the threat. The quake struck at 6:23 p.m. ET at a depth of about 6 miles below ground, about 130 miles south-southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Scientists have detected several thousand earthquakes, the vast majority of them with small magnitudes, in just over two weeks near Greece's volcanic island of Santorini, the University of Athens' crisis management committee said Tuesday, adding that a larger quake cannot be ruled out. The highly unusual barrage of earthquakes which began in late January has alarmed authorities. They have declared a state of emergency on Santorini, one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations, deploying rescue crews with drones and a sniffer dog and putting coast guard and navy vessels on standby.

Spotlight: Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., professionally known as Irv Gotti or DJ Irv, was an American record producer. He co-founded the record label Murder Inc. Records in 1998, which was an imprint of Def Jam Recordings.

More News: Blaine and Diane Smith were hurt but unsurprised when a Georgia superior court judge ruled last week that a railroad company could seize their land, despite their refusal to sell. For nearly two years, they have been fighting to stop Sandersville Railroad Co., a 130-year-old, white-owned business, from building a 4.5-mile rail spur through a historically Black neighborhood in rural Sparta. BREAKING: In this episode of BHN Talk Radio Show, Julia Ann Dudley Najieb, Cheryl Smith and Brigitte Jones review the breaking news concerning 10 million residents in Cuba who have been without power for over two weeks since hurricane Oscar. Cuban authorities say at least six people have been killed after Hurricane Oscar made landfall over the weekend, with the government still working to re-establish power after days of blackouts.

GREEN WATCH: Detroit weather hitting record highs in the mid 70s during Halloween week. Temperatures are forecasted to top out at 79 degrees in the afternoon. The record temperature currently stands at 77 degrees in 1999.

Wednesday's forecasted high is also 79 degrees. This record high temperature coincidentally stands from 1999 as well, with a high of 76 degrees.

Warm temperatures will continue on Halloween with a high of 73 degrees. However, a cold front will pass through, bringing a chance of rain showers to the area. Right now, it looks like we're in for a treat on Halloween, as the rain will exit the area before the start of trick-or-treating.

ELECTION NEWS: Voting ballots were set on fire in Oregon , Washington and Arizona.
Law enforcement including the Federal Bureau of Investigation is still investigating in both Washington and Oregon, where election officials are asking voters who dropped their ballots off at these drop boxes over the weekend to get in contact so they can be sure to vote.

In a statement, Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs denounced what he described as "acts of terror" and reminded voters that they could check online to see if their ballot had been marked as returned and would be able to print out replacement ballots or cast one in person.

Oregon and Washington vote exclusively by mail and drop box while in Arizona, almost all voters cast ballots early that are returned the same way. Ballot drop boxes have been a subject of conspiracist narratives and false claims about their security since the 2020 election cycle, according to Max Read, a senior research manager for elections at the nonprofit Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which studies extremism and disinformation.

MORE ELECTION NEWS: A federal judge threw out a challenge on Tuesday brought by GOP lawmakers in Pennsylvania over overseas voters casting ballots in the battleground state, as courts across the country are issuing a flurry of last-minute rulings on ballots and how elections are run as parties seek to expand or limit voter access.

A record 1.4 million ballots have been cast in Georgia since early voting began last Tuesday. That exceeds the early vote totals in the last presidential election year. What that means for which candidates will prevail in November is still an open question, but those numbers do tell us something about the nature of this race and the strategies the presidential campaigns might take to pull off a win. Zachary Peskowitz, an associate professor of political science at Emory University, spoke with GPB’s Peter Biello.

Meanwhile, a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in News York City featured controversial comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe as one of the speakers over the weekend. His insensitive comments that lacked humor has set fire to the internet, media and ethnic organizations and groups as people are outraged by the barrage of racist comments intertwined as "comedy."

The comments, while reminiscent of many made by Trump in the campaign’s final weeks, were made by a comedian early in the night’s schedule and were supposed to be jokes. Now, they are dominating the news cycle and putting Trump’s campaign on the backfoot with just under a week until the election.

Longtime Trump adviser Peter Navarro is calling the comedian, Tony Hinchcliffe, “the biggest, stupidest asshole that ever came down the comedy pike” after he called Puerto Rico a “floating island of hot garbage” during his often-vulgar opening set.

Michelle Obama used her star power to buoy support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the final sprint of the 2024 election.

The lawsuit focuses on the Sept. 10 debate in Pennsylvania, where Trump said the five men — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — pleaded guilty when they were tried in connection with the assault and rape of a woman who had been running in Central Park on April 19, 1989, and that the victim had died.

GREEN TECH & CLIMATE WATCH: There are around 100,000 EVs in Ethiopia so far.
The Ethiopian government estimates that number will more than quadruple by 2032. That’s largely because the national government took the extraordinary step earlier this year of banning the import of all gas-powered passenger vehicles — becoming the first nation in the world to do so.

It also effectively slashed the customs tax on imported cars: The tax on gas vehicles was up to 200% before they were banned, while the import tax for fully assembled EVs is just 15%, according to the country’s finance ministry.

Meanwhile, the head of the South Florida police union claims Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was "uncooperative" Sunday during a traffic stop Sunday ahead of the first game of the season.
Hill, 30, was pulled over, allegedly for speeding, on his way to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Sunday when he was then handcuffed and put to the ground with several officers surrounding him. He was detained but released and able to play in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, even mocking the incident in a touchdown celebration.

Diddy,” a/k/a “PD,” a/k/a “Love,” was arrested last night and charged in a three count Indictment with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. The Indictment unsealed today alleges that between 2008 and the present, COMBS abused, threatened, and coerced women and others, and led a racketeering conspiracy that engaged in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice, among other crimes. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR). Dr Tedros’s declaration came on the advice of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met earlier in the day to review data presented by experts from WHO and affected countries. The Committee informed the Director-General that it considers the upsurge of mpox to be a PHEIC, with potential to spread further across countries in Africa and possibly outside the continent. The situation has already spread to the United States.

Meanwhile, a company has found a way to make do with waste and create sustainable housing. In order to further sustainable building projects in Colombia, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is planning to utilize advanced 3D printing equipment from WASP (World’s Advanced Saving Project). The organization will use the Crane WASP, a large-format 3D printer that can print directly using natural resources like agricultural waste and nearby dirt instead of requiring concrete, reports a media outlet.

In this next story, other countries are infiltrating the 2024 elections, creating fake social media accounts in support of former president, Donald Trump, according to CNN. Luna, a self-described 32-year-old “MAGA Trump supporter” from the battleground state of Wisconsin, has gained a huge following since she joined X, formerly Twitter, in March. Her timeline has become a digital bullhorn for the “Make America Great Again” movement, praising former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, promoting conspiracy theories about his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and touting Republican talking points to nearly 30,000 followers, who she addresses as “patriots.” All False.

Feature Story: Tampons from several brands that potentially millions of people use each month can contain toxic metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium, a new study led by a UC Berkeley researcher has found. Tampons are of particular concern as a potential source of exposure to chemicals, including metals, because the skin of the vagina has a higher potential for chemical absorption than skin elsewhere on the body. Trump will engage in a Q&A with political journalists before an audience of registered convention attendees that will concentrate on the most pressing issues facing the Black community.

The event will be moderated by Rachel Scott, senior congressional correspondent for ABC News; Harris Faulkner, anchor of The Faulkner Focus and co-host of Outnumbered on FOX News; and Kadia Goba, politics reporter at Semafor.

On Monday night, more than 53,000 Black men joined a virtual conference, Win With Black Men, to rally behind the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris. During the four-hour call, organizers said the group raised more than $1.3m for the Harris campaign and grassroots voter organizations focused on Black men.

The success of the call, which was inspired by the Win With Black Women call the night before , runs counter to the narrative shaped by recent election polling indicating that 30% of Black men are planning on voting for Donald Trump. “Don’t let anybody slow us down asking the question: ‘Can a Black woman be elected president of the United States?’” Raphael Warnock, who represents Georgia in the US Senate, said on the call. “Kamala Harris can win. On the West Coast, record-breaking heat waves are lasting for days at a time, and are above 106 Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, Texas Representative Lloyd Dogget is urging President Biden to step down and let someone else lead. The call significantly escalates pressure on Biden, 81, whose disastrous debate against Trump last week set off waves of panic among his supporters about whether he is capable of winning in November and serving another four years in the White House.

But Biden and his team have so far shut down any suggestion that he will leave the race.

In other news, Fortune reports that the number of Black Fortune 500 CEOS is a dismal low, thanks to the drop of DEI programs in corporate landscapes.

Jim Clyburn’s stern warning wasn’t a criticism of Black voters of any generation. He said he was guilty of not always sharing the details of the civil rights struggles he’d experienced — “I know what I had to go through, I know what I saw my parents going through” — but he said Trump posed enough of a threat to the Black community that he and other older Black leaders need to start speaking out about “the indignities that my mother and my father had to endure so I could be where I’m at today.”

BHN Radio Spotlight: Master Distiller Nearest Green & CEO Fawn Weaver

To write “Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and The Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest,” CEO Fawn Weaver worked with archivists, historians and genealogists to find out more about Green's life. She was especially intrigued because some social media posts inaccurately claimed or implied Daniel had stolen Green's recipe and distilling techniques.

A Florida based newspaper in Miami allowed a pro-Trump political ad that had the "n word" laced throughout the ad to run for several weeks. The publisher denies knowing beforehand because he claims the ad submitter missed the deadline--but the ad still ran anyway without review.

It’s an historic first in American history for a criminal case against a former or sitting U.S. president where, 12 New York State Supreme Court jurors unanimously agreed to convict former president, Dondald Trump today.

The jurors said they unanimously agreed that Trump falsified business records to conceal a $130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. The decided this verdict in roughly 10 hours.

In this episode, Brigitte Jones and Julia Dudley Najieb discuss the breaking news regarding the vicious storms hitting Texas and the Midwest.

NOAA National Weather Service forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. NOAA’s outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.

While many American towns claim to have held the earliest celebrations of the holiday, U.S. officials declared Waterloo, New York the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. Historians say residents closed businesses, flew flags at half-staff, and held a ceremony to remember local Civil War soldiers on May 5, 1866 — three years after the bloody conflict ended.

In Blight’s 2001 book Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory, the event unfolded at a former planter’s racetrack where Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the war. Over 250 prisoners died, most of them from disease, and were buried in unmarked graves. Black Charlestonians decided to give them a proper burial by reorganizing the graves and erecting a fence around them, TIME cites from the book. They named the burial site “Martyrs of the Race Course.”

Then came May 1, when thousands of Black residents and schoolchildren showed up to sing patriotic songs, listen to religious sermons and speeches, and hold picnics in honor of the fallen Union troops. Black Union regiments concluded the event by marching around the graves. According to Blight, nearly 10,000 people, mostly Black, attended the massive tribute.

This week's BHN Spotlight focuses on five women-veteran basketball players who are hopping it up. With only 144 available roster spots currently in the WNBA, it’s one of the hardest leagues to find a place in. That just means every player is extremely elite, and the competition to stick around is fierce.
Meanwhile, Julia and Brigitte discuss the latest news with the Biden-Harris Administration who announced a new record in Federal funding and investments in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) totaling more than $16 billion from Fiscal Years (FY) 2021 through current available data for FY 2024. This new reported total is up from the previously announced over $7 billion, and captures significant additional actions already undertaken.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), as she was the catalyst to the angry exchange between her and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and her and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas). The insulting incidents happened Thursday night, May 16, 2024 during a chaotic House Oversight Committee meeting where members were supposed to be addressing a contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Merrick Garland that was advanced by a party-line vote. The hearing seem to veer off topic several times due to the insulting comments and crazy theatrics by members of opposite parties; however, members of the party behaving badly happened to be of the Republican Party.

From not following rules of the committee, to bringing up irrelevant topics, the messy committee hearing was far from a democratic process of what the American public would expect from their representatives.

The next news story acknowledges the death of Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, who was killed by a sheriff’s deputy in Florida on May 3.While responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., a deputy for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office shot Fortson six times after the Airman opened his apartment door while holding his legally-owned handgun at his side, pointing downwards.

Meanwhile, Sean “Diddy” Combs has apologized on the Instagram platform, but is it sincere enough?

The following spotlight news item focuses on the history of Black jockeys in the horse racing industry. At the first Kentucky Derby, in 1875, 13 of 15 jockeys were African American. Between 1890 and 1899, Black jockeys won six Derbies, one Preakness Stakes, and three Belmont Stakes. They were slowly phased out by 1903 due to the Jim Crow laws in the United Staes.

In this episode of BHN Talk Radio Show, Cheryl Smith, Julia Ann Dudley Najieb and Brigitte Jones discuss the DEA's reclassifying marijuana, which would change the the $34 billion cannabis industry.

      Since 1971, marijuana has been in the same category as heroin, methamphetamines and LSD, according to NBC News. Each substance under the Schedule I classification is defined as a drug with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Schedule III substances include Tylenol with codeine, steroids and testosterone.
      By rescheduling cannabis, the drug would now be studied and researched to identify concrete medical benefits, opening the door for pharmaceutical companies to get involved with the sale and distribution of medical marijuana in states where it is legal.

     Next, the news team talks about the The National Park Service grant to Michigan for its Green Book project. The National Park Service awarded $23.4 million this month to 39 projects in 16 states and the District of Columbia as part of the Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights grant program, which focuses on the preservation of sites and stories directly associated with the struggle of African Americans to gain equal rights.
     "Since 2016, the National Park Service has provided over $126 million through this program to document, preserve, and recognize the places and stories associated with the struggle for civil rights of African Americans,” said National Park Service Director Chuck Sams.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed will be named the president of the National African American Mayors Association, according to Reed’s chief of staff. In a post on X early on Monday, Chip Hill, who serves as Reed’s chief of staff, said Reed would be named president of the national organization this week. He also noted that Reed is the only mayor in Alabama to serve on the board of trustees for the U.S. Council of Mayors. Reed has previously served as both the secretary and the vice president of the African American Mayors Association.

A campaigning Nigerian chess champion has played the game non-stop for 60 hours to break the world record.Tunde Onakoya, 29, hopes to raise $1m (£800,000) for children's education across Africa through the marathon attempt that began in New York City's Times Square on Wednesday.

The next news item discussed include Orenthal James Simpson (July 9, 1947 – April 10, 2024) who was an American football player, actor and convicted felon. In 2007, Simpson was arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping. In 2008, he was convicted, and sentenced to 33 years' imprisonment with a minimum of nine years without parole. He served his sentence at the Lovelock Correctional Center in rural Nevada, until being paroled and released in 2017. He was released from parole in 2021 and lived in freedom until his death at age 76 from cancer in 2024.

Yahoo News reported that Beyoncé, who is known for her pop and RnB songs, released two country-style singles, "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages." Both are from her upcoming album "Renaissance Act II.“Last week, KYKC, a country music station in Oklahoma, rejected a request to play "Texas Hold 'Em," sparking a debate about who should be allowed to perform country music. The station later reversed its decision.

Knowles hit back at critics on Saturday by resharing an Instagram video that showed old clips of Beyoncé in country fashion before the release of her new songs.Knowles said in the caption that cowboy culture was not strictly for white people, reminding readers that they grew up in Texas.

California's governor, Gavin Newsom, is in a video that has gone viral nationwide due to the nature of an in-store incident with a store clerk.

Democratic Governor Newsom has been coined by some far right politicians and voters as being "too soft on crime." This was a focus for many Republicans in California during a recall effort of Newsom in 2021--they even paid for a commercial during the recall effort purporting this misleading information, according to the Los Angeles Times. The same article explained that compared to other states, a report from the California Policy Lab found that violent crime rates increased slightly and property crime rates decreased substantially in California between 2019 and 2020.

Even if the media corrects such misinformation, some people still will choose to believe what's not true because it is more sensational. Newsom discovered this himself this past December while buying items at a Target store in Sacramento--If one store clerk is misinformed, imagine what others must believe as well ...

In this episode of BHN Radio, news publishers Cheryl smith, Julia Ann Dudley Najieb and Brigitte Jones first discuss the breaking news about the three US soldiers killed in the drone attack on a US military outpost in Jordan. The three Black soldiers were identified as Sgt. William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia, according to the Defense Department. They were all assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said at a briefing, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, California has been suffering severe atmospheric rivers for the past several days, with more rain storms to come. An atmospheric river is a narrow corridor or filament of concentrated water vapor transported in the atmosphere. It’s like a river in the sky that can be 1,000 miles long. On average, atmospheric rivers have about twice the regular flow of the Amazon River, according to Qian Cao.

As the second week of Black History Month is under way, BHN Radio news publishers honor Carter G. Woodson for trailblazing the path from Negro History Week which spawned into Black History Month. Born in Virginia, the son of former slaves, Woodson had to put off schooling while he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. He graduated from Berea College, and became a teacher and school administrator. Earning graduate degrees at the University of Chicago, Woodson then became the second African American, after W. E. B. Du Bois, to obtain a PhD degree from Harvard University. Woodson is the only person whose parents were enslaved in the United States to obtain a PhD in history.[6] Largely excluded from the uniformly-white academic history profession, Woodson realized the need to make the structures which support scholarship in black history, and black historians. He taught at historically black colleges, Howard University and West Virginia State University, but spent most of his career in Washington, D.C., managing the ASALH, public speaking, writing, and publishing.
