<itunes:summary>Over the past 5 years host, Ryan Charles Brown has given over 7,500 Uber/Lyft rides around the city of Los Angeles. In this time, he heard stories from people traveling in from all parts of the world. Some of the stories that were shared included, rites of passage into “manhood”, what it might mean to “be a man” today and in the future, and how can men participate in dismantling toxic masculinity? Then one night, while sipping some whiskey at a bar with a friend, Whiskey & Ry was born.

The Social Club we are building seeks a conversation that would cross multiple boundaries and build bridges into areas of conversation that have been “cut off” by the traditional interpretation of masculinity and what it means to be a man today. Whiskey & Ry provides a pathway into an honest, vulnerable, and courageous dialogue about topics that will both interest and challenge listeners to think deeper into ways in which men can be a part of the movement to promote men's self-care and healthy expressions of masculinity.

In this episode of Whiskey and Ry, host Ryan engages in a deep conversation with philosopher and author Peter Rollins about masculinity. They explore Peter's personal experiences growing up in Belfast, the impact of his childhood on his understanding of masculinity, and the societal pressures surrounding male identity. The discussion delves into themes of death, mental health, and the complexities of masculine and feminine energies, ultimately questioning the limitations of labeling masculinity as an identity. This conversation delves into the complexities of masculinity and femininity, exploring how societal expectations shape male identity and desire. The speakers discuss the challenges men face in modern society, including the need for positive role models, the impact of despair and isolation, and the importance of male friendships. They emphasize the necessity of risk-taking and emotional engagement in overcoming feelings of worthlessness and despair, ultimately advocating for a deeper understanding of male experiences and the need for connection. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the complexities of dating, relationships, and desire in contemporary society, particularly in the context of Los Angeles. They explore how societal changes have affected dating dynamics, the evolving grammar of relationships, and the role of desire in human experience.
David is such an incredible musician and I am so thankful he came on the show to promote his new single, "Shelby." And believe it or not, he isn't the last musician of the season! I am so grateful to connect with so many amazing guests and David is one of a kind! Did you know he is also a dog sitter? The guy can do it all...

Make sure to check out his new single and his entire catalog of music on Apple Music. NOT on Spotify. (j/k you can listen there but David works for Apple Music so naturally they get all his love!)

Alex is my brother-in-law, and the husband to my sister, Christy, who we heard from in the last episode. In this captivating episode, Alex shares his perspective, as we joked about on the show, about him being the "low man" on the totem pole. But his endless love and support for Christy is apparent throughout the entire conversation. I am so thankful to Alex for coming on and sharing his part of the story!

We have one more installment of this series coming soon! Stay tuned for the 3-Part Series finale and also for more episodes in the upcoming season.

After an unplanned (unexpected) break, we are back with all new episodes! In our first episode, we get the special privilege of hearing from someone I have known my whole life. Someone who knows me better than most people I know. It's my sister, Christy!

About 4 years ago, she and her husband, Alex, and their two girls had their lives changed most magically. It all started when my sister answered a Facebook post from a friend from High School. This would be the beginning of her journey as a surrogate for her friend.

In this episode, Christy shares her story and all that went into her making this selfless and life-changing decision. As her big bro, I am so proud of her and how she showed such a radical act of love. And I can't wait for you to hear from the woman herself! Please enjoy this extra special episode with one of my all-time favorite humans.----more----

In the ep, I talk about a great new book by Justin Baldoni called Man Enough; Undefining my Masculinity. While I haven't read the book yet, I am so stoked for Justin to have put this out into the world. More men should be having this conversation and the fact he was so bold as to write about it and then publish it, my hat's off to you! Thanks for sharing your story.

I share about a great book I am reading called, Hooked: How to create habit-forming products. Do you want the inside scoop to a new product I am building? Send me an e-mail and let's chat!

To wrap up I talk about the crazy story of WeWork and their 47 billion dollar evaluation, which I found out about after watching a sweet documentary on Hulu. Check it out and send me a DM and let me know what you think! Make sure to check in with the show notes and give a little love to our regulars and check out our Patreon series!----more----

<itunes:summary>Grab a seat (and maybe a few tissues) and join me and my good friend, Nick Warnes, as we hear about his family's journey with fertility and deciding to enter into In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Nick shares with us how he and his wife, Whitney, came to the decision together, and what it was like to endure the highs and lows of getting good news followed by the heartbreak of getting the worst news any parents can get. But the story doesn't end there for the Warnes! They have a beautiful son, Lee, and are both finding happiness with the blessings they have today. But do they want to give the process another go? You will have to tune in and find out! Thanks Nick for coming on and sharing your story!----more----

If men are introduced to their own sexuality before they know what to do with it, as I was, the chances of them having issues with their sexual expression as adults could be substantial. But that is not an excuse to do nothing about it. Men can learn how to express themselves in a manner that is healthy and does not harm another person.

We take on the deep topics on this show and this episode is proof nothing is off limits if it will allow for growth and maturity to take place.

I also share some thoughts on COVID-19 and what it has been like for me to be both a parent and a romantic partner during this time of quarantine. It's not been pretty but it has taught me so much! Bethany McKinney Fox is the author of Disability and the Way of Jesus: Holistic Healing in the Gospel and the Church. She is also the pastor of Beloved Everbody, a community that serves folks with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as able-bodied folks in Southern California. For Bethany, finding joy means identifying and celebrating and uplifting the gifts of people of all abilities - especially focusing on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities: not only the gifts they have but the gifts they are (just as we all are gifts to one another). Join in as Bethany and I talk through Gender Roles in marriage, partnerships and how you never really marry "the right one." Thanks for coming on the show, Bethany!----more----

Dr. Carline was one of the original Rideshare folks to encourage me to take this topic of dismantling toxic masculinity and to bring it to a larger audience. I am so grateful for her time and enjoyed every minute of our conversation! I sat down to record this episode with Dr. Caroline a few months back. This will explain some of the references we make such as the ad run by Gillette. Make sure to follow Dr. Heldman on Twitter and pick up one of her books on politics, gender equality, and equal representation.

Part II of the Pilot Episode of Whiskey & Ry

Over the past 3 years, Ryan Charles Brown, has given over 5,000 Uber rides around the city of Los Angeles. In this time, he has shared his “coming of age” story with people from all around the world, while also hearing stories from their upbringing as they travel towards a final destination. Some of the items discussed were: rites of passage into “manhood”, what it might mean to “be a man” today and in the future, and how can men participate in dismantling toxic masculinity? Then one night, while sipping some whiskey at a bar with a friend, Whiskey & Ry was born.

After the end of The Mission Podcast, Ryan was seeking a new conversation that would cross multiple boundaries and build bridges into areas of conversation that have been “cut off” by the traditional interpretation of masculinity and what it means to be a man today. Whiskey & Ry provides a pathway into honest, vulnerable and courageous dialogue about topics that will both interest and challenge listeners to think deeper into ways in which men can be a part of the movement to dismantle toxic masculinity.
