Ishmael has been a longtime activist in Michigan and knows the Arab and Muslim community very well ... he was also a founder of ACCESS and the director of ACCESS for 32 years ... and he headed the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services under former Gov. Granholm who was later appointed to head the Department of Energy for the Biden Administration ... and he was also a vice chair of the Democratic party in Michigan for more than a decade ... and was an autoworker and worked on overseas freighters, He also is a US military veteran ....

We will also speak with Dr. Bishara Bahbah who is the chairman of Arab Americans for Trump. Bahbah was a longtime Democrat who switched parties following Biden's unconditional and all out support for Israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza this past year and now with the expansion of Israel's wars and violence against Lebanon, murdering tens of thousands of civilians in Palestine and in Lebanon.

My first guest today is Democrat Suzanne Akhras, running for the Illinois House 82nd District, a seat that became vacant in December 2023, with a Republican appointed to fill the vacancy. Akhras is a passionate advocate committed to driving positive change and upholding shared values. She is focused on ensuring women’s access to reproductive healthcare, expanding mental health resources, advocating for community safety, and reducing gun violence. Although the Harris campaign later apologized, this incident created an awkward moment, challenging her campaign’s efforts to regain Arab American support in Michigan, a swing state.

First up is Bill Lipinski, Lipinski served in the U.S. Congress 22 years from 1983 until 2005. Lipinski's district on the Southwest side and suburbs of Chicago in Illinois included one of the largest concentrations of Arab, Palestinian and Muslim voters in the country. Lipinski, a conservative Democrat, also is the co-host with me of the weekly podcast on American politics "Two Guys on Politics". Lipinski will help us understand 3rd party candidates and their impact on the election process if a candidate fails to receive 270 Electoral College Votes.

We'll also speak with Third Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein .. Stein represents the Green Party which has a strong history in impacting presidential elections that cannot be taken for granted, even though she has been pushed aside by American's Main Stream News media ... The Green Party included the candidacy of Lebanese American Ralph Nader in 2000 ... Nader's candidacy had a huge impact on Al Gore who lost to George W. John Zogby: How much power do Arab and Muslim voters have in the next US elections?

CHICAGO: Veteran pollster John Zogby, president and founder of the polling company John Zogby Strategies, has said Arab and Muslim voters have more influence today than they have ever had since first settling in this country, and that the issue driving their vote is Gaza.

Zogby noted that the public needs to look at polls not in terms of who is “winning” or leading the race, but rather in which way the voter popularity of a candidate is trending.

Recent polls show that the majority of Arab and Muslim American voters favor third Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party, but that significant support is also shown for Vice President Kamala Harris who is expected to be named as the Democratic Party candidate for president at the Chicago Convention next week.

Chris Habiby: Green Party’s Jill Stein gaining support from Arab, Muslim voters in presidential race: Survey

CHICAGO: Third Party Presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein’s support of a two-state solution and an end to Israel’s brutal military offensive in the Gaza Strip is driving her popularity among Arab- and Muslim-American voters, says Chris Habiby, the national government affairs and advocacy director for the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

During an appearance on The Ray Hanania Radio Show, Habiby explained the results of an ADC survey conducted at the end of July. This poll showed the Green Party’s Stein with support from more than 45.3 percent of Arab and Muslim voters, while Vice President Kamala Harris received 27.5 percent. 

Former President Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. received 2 percent and 1.3 percent respectively, according to the survey.

There are two big takeaways from the survey, Habiby said, with the first being how deeply unpopular President Joe Biden is within the Arab-American community across the country.

Chicago -- More and more Arabs are entering the moviemaking industry but not just as actors and they are expanding into many of the industry's key foundation positions, two Arab Americans who play prominent roles in filmmaking said.

Egyptian American Mico Saad, an actor and filmmaker and member of the Golden Globes Jury, and Lebanese American Hamzah Saman, the president of his own casting company, told Arab News "changes are necessary" to push open the doors of Hollywood filmmaking which plays a major role in defining how the world sees different people.

Saad immigrated to England from Alexandria, Egypt where he discovered a robust filmmaking industry, and then in 2018 immigrated to America which he calls "the entertainment capital of the world" where he carved out career as both an actor and producer creating several TV shows.

Pappas recognized that many ethnic Americans were not able to engage the government system and decided to do something about it by translating her service website at CookCountyTreasurer.com into 127 languages and she specifically reached out to the ethnic communities that are th eleast engaged in the government process, like Arab Americans, hired people from their commuities to act as liaisons and initiated programs to help them to fully enjoy the benefits of their governments. In the past six months, Pappas initiated a tax overpayment refund program and noted that she has helped Arab American tax payers apply to receive as much as $15 million in overpayment refunds.

We have an amazing story and interviews for you today ...

Lebanese American Carlos Ghosn was a celebrated businessman who radically restructured the Renault automobile company when he was hired there in 1996 and it increased the company's profits dramatically the following year.

Several years later, Renault and Nissan formed an alliance that Ghosn oversaw and he joined Nissan as its COO in 1999, becoming president in 2000 and then CEO in 2001. He was only the 4th non-Japanese person to head a Japanese automaker.

The world was awed by Ghosn's successful and rapid rise in the auto industry.

But in 2018, things quickly changed when he was arrested by Tokyo Police and accused of engaging in "false accounting" practices. He was also accused and later charged by the Government of France in April 22 for his role in overseeing Renault, a dramatic fall from grace across the board.

Ghosn was arrested, released and then re-arrested several times, and placed under house arrest, until after posting bond was released on bail in 2019. His fate in Japan seemed certain and ominous until a former GREEN BERRETT Michael Taylor stepped in

On December 29, 2019, Ghosn left his Tokyo apartment and was secretly escorted out of the country in a large crate by my Taylor, a former Green Berrett whose wife was related to Ghosn. It was an amazing escape that angered Japanese and French Officials.

Taylor and his son Peter were later arrested in May 2020 in Massachusetts and then extradicted to Japan in March 2021. His son was eventually released after serving time and Michael Taylor was released on January 1, 2023.

Three incumbent council members in Hamtramck, Michigan are seeking re-election, Muhammed Hassan, Nayeem Leon Choudhury and Muhammed Alsomiri.

The six challengers are are Sari Ahmed, Ruhel Amin, Nasr Saleh Hussain, Muhtasin Rahman Sadman, Yousuf Osman Saed and Lynn Blasey. Three incumbent council members who are not facing election in the City Council currently include members Muhith Mahmood, Abu Musa and Khalil Refai.

Blasey is of European ancestry and Christian with along history working in the Arab American community including at the Arab Museum in Dearborn.

SEGMENT 1: Illinois Legislator Cyril Nichols (Democrat 32nd DIstrict) says that Arab Americans need to do more to balance the relationship with African Americans. Nichols’ 32nd DIstrict represent a large segment of Arab Americans including in Bridgeview. Blacks have done much to help Arabs in America, Nichols noted citing the historic support Arabs received from the late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington and the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson. Nichols noted he has introduced legislation to help Arab American businesses in Illinois qualify for a special status to share in 30 percent of the state’s billions in annual contract awards, under the Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) program, and he was instrumental in securing $150,000 grant to support the food pantry of the Bridgeview Mosque/The Mosque Foundation, which is Chicagoland's first mosque built in 1981.

SEGMENT 2: Author Ramsey Hanhan discusses his new book “Fugitive Dreams,” a novel based on his own life detailing the challenges he faced growing up in the Israeli occupied West Bank and the challenges he faces as an American Palestinian in America.

During the past few months, we saw the deaths of three Saudi Students in the U.S., two the result of tragic accidents while the students were on break in Cleveland and in Montana, and a third student who was the victim of a murder at his apartment in Philadelphia. Are we missing something here?

In Segment 1, we will speak with Abdullah Al-Gheraibi, the father of 25-year-old Al-Waleed Al-Ghareibi, who was murdered on January 23 by a 19-year-old woman who attempted to rob him after she asked him to help her get something from her apartment. The suspect, Nicole Marie Rodgers, lived in the same building and has been charged with murder.

In Segment 2, we will speak with Gina Kerzman, spokesperson for Glacier National Park on another Saudi student who died, Atheer Al-Khalban, 28. Al-Khalban drowned on Monday May 22 in Avalanche Creek in Glacier National Park in Montana after falling off a rocky overhang.

And, in Segment 3, we'll speak with the spokesperson for the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Washington DC., Fahad Nazer, about the Al-Gheraibi murder and the two accidental deaths of Al-Khalban and the death of another student, Abdulrahman Al Anzi, 29, who drowned in Lake Erie during a stay in Cleveland, Ohio on Jan. 30. In each case, the Saudi Embassy worked to help the families of each of the student victims ...

Mr. Nazer will also discuss the return of two Saudi Astronauts Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali AlQarni spent eight days on the International Space Station, where they conducted a series of science experiments.

A power struggle between Sudan's rival military leaders shattered a tenuous peace that existed in Sudan causing a conflict that has spread throughout the country.

Fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces erupted in Sudan's capital Khartoum in mid-April and have now engulfed large parts of Sudan. Thousands of civilians have been killed and tens of thousands more are fleeing the widening conflict.

Saudi Arabia and the United States are coordinating face-to-face negotiations in Jeddah between the two sides in the hopes of ending this outbreak of violence that has torn Sudan apart.

We will speak with two guests, first, an American woman who heads an NGO in Khartoum who helps the Sudanese people ... we are withholding her identity at her request for safety concerns ... we'll just call her "Frances" ... she will tell us about her harrowing story of fleeing the violence in Sudan ... she is now back safe in the US and will be returning to Sudan to resume her humanitarian work ...

We will also speak with Dr. Hafeez AbdelHafeez, a Sudanese American physician who arrived in Khartoum only five hours before the violence spread across the country ... he is a board member of the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) ... which is raising funds to help people in Sudan who are in need...

In our final segment, we will shift gears and speak with Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, the first Arab-American and Muslim mayor as well as being the second youngest mayor in the city's history. 

Before being elected mayor in November 2021, Mayor Hammoud served three terms in the Michigan State General Assembly from Jan 2017 through his election as Dearborn Mayor.. He was only 26 years old when he ran for the state house and won. Mayor Hammoud will update us on some of his administration's "firsts" including designating Ramadan's EIDs as paid holidays for Dearborn city employees ... the first of any city in the country to do that we're told.

Guest Interview: Norman Roule

Roule served for 34-years in the Central Intelligence Agency, managing significant programs relating to the Middle East. Mr. Roule’s service in the CIA’s Directorate of Operations included roles as Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief and Chief of Station.

He has held multiple senior assignments in Washington as well as during more than 15 years of overseas work. He served as the National Intelligence Manager for Iran (NIM-I) at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence from November 2008 until September 2017. As NIM-I, he was the principal Intelligence Community (IC) official responsible for overseeing national intelligence policy and activities related to Iran and Iran-related issues, to include IC engagement on these topics with senior policymakers in the National Security Council, the Department of State and Congress. Mr. Roule received multiple national security awards during his career.

Mr. Roule currently works as a business consultant on Middle East political, security, economic, and energy issues with an emphasis on the Gulf Cooperation Council states and Iran. He also serves as Senior Adviser to the Counter Extremism Project, United Against Nuclear Iran, the Nuclear Threat Initiative and as a member of the Advisory Board of the Arabia Foundation. Mr. Roule is currently also a non-resident Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is frequently asked to speak on Middle East issues and has appeared on Al-Hurra Television, BBC, Bloomberg Radio and Television, CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox, Israeli international television (I24), NPR, Saudi 24, Sky News, Sky News Arabia, and the podcast “Intelligence Matters.” He is a frequent contributor to The Cipher Brief and has written for U.S. and international print media.

Today we are going to look at the politics of the Arab American community with two guests, Paul Sophiea a Republican and Conservative Michigan who has run for political office there in the past, and Jim Zogby a Democrat and president of the Arab American Institute based in Washington D.C. How do the two parties treat Arab American issues? What challenges do they face as candidates running in party elections.

In Segment 1: Paul Sophiea, Republican and conservative Arab American political activist, teacher and a business consultant in the Dearborn area and has served on various State boards. He was a former GOP candidate in Michigan's 15th State House District.

Segment 2: Jim Zogby, is President and co-founder the Arab American Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based organization which serves as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community, in 1985 and continues to serve as its president. He is Director of Zogby Research Services, a firm that has conducted groundbreaking surveys across the Middle East.

Dr. Zogby has also been personally active in U.S. politics for many years; in 1984 and 1988 he served as Deputy Campaign manager and Senior Advisor to the Jesse Jackson Presidential campaign. In 1988, he led the first ever debate on Palestinian statehood at that year’s Democratic convention in Atlanta, GA. In 2000, 2008, and 2016 he served as an advisor to the Gore, Obama, and Sanders presidential campaigns.

Mr. Khalaf served as the Interim ADC Legal Director in 1997, and was an intern with the organization in 1996. Mr. Khalaf becomes the first ADC Intern to return to the organization as President – a testament to the organizations commitment to the development of young and future leaders. Mr. Khalaf recently served as a member of the National Board of the ADC.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is a national grassroots, civil rights organization that welcomes people of all backgrounds, faiths and ethnicities as members. ADC is non-sectarian and non-partisan and is the largest Arab-American grassroots organization in the United States.

Segment 2: Shadin Maali, chief of district affairs for Congresswoman Marie Newman, who was elected in 2020 to represent the 3rd Congressional District. A Democrat, Newman was very supportive of Palestinian and Muslim rights and was targeted by the pro-Israel Democrats who forced her into a fight during redistricting with Democratic Congressman Sean Casten. On Tuesday, Casten defeated Newman. Casten received 13,605 votes or 54 percent and Newman received 10,661 votes or 42.3 percent of the vote. A third candidate, Charles Hughes received 957 votes or 3.8 percent of the vote.

Segment 1: Tony Abu Akleh, brother of slain Palestinian American Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh (Aqleh) ...June 11 will mark one month since Shireen was killed while covering a rally for Palestinians ... and nothing has been resolved yet.

The Israelis immediately denied killing her but scores of witnesses said that the spot where Shireen was standing wearing a vest with the word PRESS emblazoned in large letters was the focus on Israeli military sniper fire. Israeli Snipers don't just shoot indiscriminately. They shoot for the head and to kill.

Ned Price, the State Department spokesman said Israel had the wherewithal and the capabilities to conduct a thorough investigation ... after denouncing the killing of an American and a journalist.

But this week on June 6, Senator Mitt Romney a Republican from Utah and Jon Ossoff a Democrat from Georgia in a bipartisan letter demanded a "full and transparent investigation."

That prompted Secretary of State Anthony Blinken yesterday June 8 to say he wanted an independent investigation also.

He completed his fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at the University of Illinois, Chicago, IL, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center Affiliate, University of Illinois, Chicago, IL.

He attended Damascus University Medical School. He is currently a physician with the Alpha Med physicians group, and an associate clinical professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Since 2014, Dr. Hamadeh has acted as the SAMS Midwest Chapter president. He is also a SAMS foundation board member, a member of SAMS advocacy committee and the SAMS Lebanon committee member.

Today we are going to look at the recent elections in Lebanon ... It has been a tumultuous two years for Lebanon ... the explosion of August 4, 2020 which took 218 lives, injured 7,000 people and left 300,000 homeless. Then there was the economic crisis that followed, and the uncertain and continued political turmoil ... all this has pushed Lebanon into gridlock, a nation that continues to be governed by a sectarian or Confessional division of political office.

The head of state is the president, who is elected by a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly for a term of six years and is eligible to serve consecutive terms. By an unwritten convention, the president must be a Maronite Christian, the premier a Sunni Muslim, and the speaker of the National Assembly a Shi'iMuslim. The president, in consultation with the speaker of the National Assembly and the parliamentary deputies, invites a Sunni Muslim to form a cabinet, and the cabinet members’ portfolios are organized to reflect the sectarian balance. The cabinet, which holds more executive power than the president, requires a vote of confidence from the Assembly in order to remain in power.

He regularly contributes analysis in a weekly blog hosted by ATFL on current events in Lebanon and the region.

Nadia Farra serves as a Special Assistant to Deputy Secretary Sherman covering the Middle East and North Africa, Counterterrorism, and Cyber issues.  Before, she served as the Senior Syria Desk Officer in the Bureau for Near Eastern Affairs for over six years.  Nadia entered the civil service in 2011 as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) at USAID where she staffed former Administrator Raj Shah before serving on the Yemen Desk. 

Mahmoud El-Hamalawy is a Press Officer in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs covering North Africa.  Previously, he served as an Outreach Officer under GPA’s National Media Outreach unit advising and staffing press engagements, interviews, and Opinion Editorials (Op-Eds) for the Secretary of State and Senior Department officials.  Prior to joining the Department, Mr. El-Hamalawy was a Senior News Producer for covering breaking news and stories out of Washington and their global impact. 

The Arab-Americans in Foreign Affairs Agencies Employee Affinity Group is the Department’s only employee-based organization concerned with the promotion, protection, and utilization of the cultural, linguistic, personal, and professional assets Arab-American foreign affairs professionals commonly share.

This morning we look at the impact COVID is having on the Arab World and then delve into the tragic reversal of Tunisia which was one praised as handling the pandemic better than any other country, but collapsed under the pressure of corruption and politics led by the Annahda Islamist Political Party and now has one of the worst COVID infection rates in the world.

The Middle East and North Africa is witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases aggravated by the Delta variant of the virus, and it is expected to get worse.

Tunisia is among five African states in the throes of a devastating third wave of COVID-19 infections. The country, with a population of 11.69 million, has reported more than 18,600 deaths since the pandemic was declared in March last year.

To help us understand how serious this Coronavirus threat is, and if it is dissipating or worsening, we have several experts and journalists:

The project is creating a large reservoir of water but that is reducing the water flow significantly and potentially can create havoc for Egypt whose river communities depend on the water for their crops and industries …

O’Reilly who announced he is retiring … that primary election is August 3 … and already some eight candidates have announced their intentions to run to succeeded O’Reilly … many of them Arab Americans … we’ll look at that election battle next week July 14 here on The Ray Hanania Show, but for now let’s welcome Imad Hamad …

Anyone who has been to Lebanon knows how beautiful that country is and remembers the elegance and magic of Beirut … but today things seem bleak …

A bright side is that the famous singer Fayrouz who is 86 years old turned to social media and sent a selfie of herself with her daughter Rima on Twitter maybe reminding people that despite the challenges Lebanon has a brilliant and beautiful culture and people … it gave everyone in Lebanon I’m told a mental boost …

In the 117th Congress, he serves on the House Appropriations Committee where he sits on the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee; the Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration Subcommittee; and the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee. He also serves on the House Education and Labor Committee and the Joint Economic Committee.

Congressman Pocan just returned from a trip to the Middle East about the growth of the pro-justice pro-Arab movement in the US Congress and they seem to be making more and more waves … and it was a trip that Pocan took to Israel many years ago that opened his eyes to the disparity in how Palestinians are treated. He is a strong voice for Palestinian rights.

Congressman Pocan is also among 50 members urging president Biden to redirect $50 billion saved through the withdrawal of US Troops from Afghanistan from the Defense Dept Budget to put an end to endless wars, and re-invest the money into jobs, healthcare, climate security and housing …

In Segment 2: We’ll speak with Jonathan Gornall on the newly launched Arab News GERD deep dive a look at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam … How will Egypt be impacted by Ethiopia filling its GERD reservoir? The primary purpose of the dam is electricity production to relieve Ethiopia’s acute energy shortage and for electricity export to neighboring countries. With a planned installed capacity of 6.45 gigawatts, the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa when completed, as well as the seventh largest in the world.

Gornall is a British author and journalist formerly with The Times of London, is a features writer for Arab News. Now based in the UK, he lived and worked in the Middle East for several years.

Segment 1: Reporter Saeed Al-Batati talked about his coverage of Yemen.

This week the Iranian Houthis fired a missile that killed 17 people, including a 5-year-old child. A 5-year-old child who was unlucky twice in her short life, once in the fact that she born in a country that is unsafe, and the second time when she was killed during a barrage of attacks. Saeed is a Yemeni reporter and during the interview he expressed his frustration with the lack of coverage and outrage over the horrible mistreatment of Yemeni citizens by the Iranian Houthis. He then went on to discuss how this lack of coverage removes any pressure on the Houthis and eliminates any possibility for things to change for the better.

In Segment 2,Cornelia Meyer, Arab News Op-Ed columnist and business writer, discussed several issues from corruption to vaccinations. To begin they discussed the Global Anti-Corruption Coalition, which shows the nations bonding together to fight anti-corruption on a global scale and gives more support to national efforts. Even though it might not seem the most crucial during Covid-19, as Cornelia stated during the interview, “You have to keep the eye on the ball.” Corruption is a global problem that will continue through elections, pandemics, wars, etc and it cannot be overlooked.

Following the discussion about the Global Anti-Corruption Coalition, Ray and Cornelia discussed vaccinations in the Middle East and the wide disparity in vaccinated population percentages between developed and developing countries. It is important for 1st world countries such as the USA to help lesser developed countries because unless the whole world gets vaccinated, there will be a continuous development of new mutations of the virus.

The interview then shifted to the USA and the new bill passed by the Senate aimed to bolster technological and industrial capacity in the technology and innovation space. While the US seems to be a very divided country, with Republicans and Democrats constantly disagreeing, having China as a common foe managed to unite the opposing sides and pass the bill by 68-32 votes.
The segment with Cornelia then finished off with a discussion about the recent Aramco Bond issue.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon served as Israel’s 17th Permanent Representative to the United Nations from October 2015. He currently serves as Chairman of the World Likud. At the UN, Danon became the first Israeli to lead a UN committee when he was elected Chairman of the Sixth (Legal) Committee in 2016. The following year, he served as Vice President of the General Assembly for its 72nd (2017-2018) session.
