After a well deserved break from the madness that was the FIG Working Week 2023, it is appropriate that our first episode features an outstanding Young Surveyor who participated in her first FIG event. Your host, Tim Burch, recently chatted with Ashley Metz, Surveying Technician II at M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying in Albany, New York, and reminisced about the wonderful and upbeat atmosphere at the Working Week in Orlando. Ashley's attendance to FIG was supported by NYSAPLS and she was everywhere, including volunteering her time to help NSPS with hosting duties at several functions. She shared her experiences on networking with Young Surveyors from around the world, and how surveying covers many more tasks and responsibilities than in the US. Ashley and Tim also talked about participating in the "Connect & Reflect" mental health discussion group and how often surveyors don't look after their mental wellbeing.

The members of the Bucks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors (PSLS) recently hosted the Senior Scholarship Dinner for the students within the Bucks County Technical High School surveying program. NSPS Executive Director Tim Burch was in attendance, so he recorded conversations with the students, company sponsors, and Program Lead Doug Bennet for this week's bonus posting.

Check out their conversation and hear how these students are utilizing this educational opportunity to invest in themselves for a "future proof" career. They also share how co-op employment through company sponsors are providing a great way to build their careers while minimizing the debt for future schooling.

A second generation surveyor, Jen shared her story of trying not to follow in her father's footsteps, but how this wonderful profession brought her back to her true calling as a licensed surveyor. They talked about how the evolution of women in surveying has come a long way and how the profession can do a better job going forward. Jen noted that having a passion for the profession and good work ethic can lead to a fulfilling career that will last a lifetime.

She is truly a role model for all surveyors by how she is spreading our message about the profession.

The 2023 NSPS Student Competition will be held March 29-31 in conjunction with the Spring Business Meeting of the National Society of Professional Surveyors. There will be three separate divisions:

Associates degree programs, Baccalaureate degree programs, and nontraditional combinations of students sponsored by a Professional Surveying Association. A team must submit a Final Registration Form to the NSPS Office by email (trishm@nsps.us.com) or fax to 240-439-4952, no later than December 15, 2022. There is no registration fee.

ALTA/NSPS LAND TITLE SURVEY STANDARDS ARE HERE TO PROTECT YOU!

A recent inquiry from a surveying professional posed the following question: can a plat be titled a "ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey" without doing any field work? We bring in our resident Land Title Survey expert, Mr. Gary Kent, to pose this question and others as surveyors nationwide are under fire for cheaper surveys and quicker turnaround times.

No, you are NOT the only surveyor to refuse to do something unethical on a survey, so listen in on Gary's advice on how to deal with unreasonable clients and requests. Doing anything else may up costing your license and career.

The Department of Labor has issued proposed rule changes that will include surveying under the Davis-Bacon Act, so we asked John Palatiello, NSPS Legislative Consultant, back on the podcast to discuss the issue. He shared the history of the Davis-Bacon Act and why including surveying under rules typically established for labor is a negative for the profession. John talks about how NSPS, our state affiliates, and our membership can help oppose these proposed changes so our profession will not be subject to these proposed rules.

This informative episode covers the importance of contracts with our resident Land Title Survey expert, Mr. Gary Kent, PLS. He recently sat down with Tim Burch to discuss why a signed contract is particularly important when performing and providing a Land Title Survey along with several good tips on protecting both the surveyor and client with a solid agreement. Gary stressed the importance of spelling out which Table A items are to be included along with making it clear that the standard surveyor certification is required for the final survey. Rick has served on The Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors (CALS) Board of Directors since 2007 and was selected as its Surveyor of the Year in 2014.  Rick represented CALS on the NSPS Board of Governors from 2007 to 2013, receiving the Key Governor Award in 2007, and serving as Chairman for two years (2012 and 2013).  As a CALS NSPS Director he received the Key Director Award in 2016.

Rick became a member of the NSPS team of ABET Program Evaluators (PEV) in 2014, served on the NSPS Executive Committee in 2015 and received an NSPS Presidential Citation in 2017.  

Rick currently serves as an NSPS Trustee on the NSPS Foundation Board (2015 to the present) and has served as Vice-Chair for the last two years.

The most important thing to remember is that if by chance someone is bitten by a tick and experiences a bad reaction to the bite, such as achy joints, flu-like symptoms, maybe a bulls-eye rash, etc. do not put off seeing a doctor!!! Early detection and treatment is absolutely critical. Proper treatment is normally with antibiotics which usually fixes it in the early stages. Remember, though, these diseases never go away on their own, they only get worse.

Our guest this week is Galen Scott from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). As the Constituent Resources Manager, Galen is involved with many of the tools and programs going on within NGS. He chatted recently with Tim Burch about the GPS on Benchmarks program and how important having crowdsourced data is for completing the geoid base for the 2022 datum changes. Galen also announced the new features to the OPUS programs, including a simplified way for bluebooking significant control stations AND the feature to upload RTK data to incorporate with your OPUS solutions. Lots of great stuff coming out of Silver Spring!

Our guests today are from the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association (IPLSA) and have organized a task force focusing on workforce development, and more specifically, an apprenticeship program for technicians. We sat down during the recent IPLSA Annual conference to talk about the program after a well-received panel discussion earlier in the program. Recent aerial surveys using LiDAR technology was used to determine the peak was 3,995 feet, not the 4,003 feet previously determined by the United States Coast Survey in the mid 1800’s. This new elevation determination puts the peak at risk of being dropped off the famed 4,000 Footers list within New Hampshire.

Eric and his fellow NHLSA Young Surveyors set out to measure the peak using modern surveying equipment and methods to confirm the elevation. This episode talks about how the Young Surveyors began and conquered their quest of Mt. Tecumseh.
