EP69 Music, Mushrooms and Russia - Irene Antonez

Irene Antonez is an artist and musician from Russia. Through her music and art she celebrates sensuality, emotionality and the beauty of nature and the microscopic world.

Her family roots are Cossack which are a semi-nomadic and semi-militarized people from the steppes of Ukraine and Russia. So in Irene's family tree there are Russians, Ukrainians and Lithuanians.

We discussed the situation in Ukraine, how that affects her family and relatives on both sides of the line, how they were taught at school in Russia that there should never be a war again but also how the messaging over the past 7-8 years has been changing with the rise of nationalism. And we talked about Russophobia that has been present and now is amplified by the War.

Mushrooms are a big part of Irene's universe and art expression and she explained to me how advanced these organisms are and what we could learn from them as humans.

And then we talked about her music and how Cossacks and Vikings might be connected historically.

The vinyl is making a comeback! And he told me how his Sticky Fingers album went from being worth 200 EUR to 2000 EUR when he met Keith Richards in Prague. The Czech Republic population is one of the smallest consumers of fish in Europe. So Marek Jirovec and his partners took on a mission most people would compare to trying to sell sand in the Sahara desert or snow to Icelandic people.

But they have managed and built up a great company in boxxi.cz that delivers from "shore to door" some of the best fish in the world amongst others from Iceland. Marek visited my podcast and we talked about Czech mentality, if Czechs should have stood up to aggression in history or if they were just very clever being small amongst giants. Why do Czechs not like Russia? But they still have a lot of Russian friends....What about all the refugees from Ukraine? Chris Jagger is a musician, actor, writer and explorer who has recorded over 100 songs, acted in multiple films and plays as well as performing music with the likes of Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and of course his older brother Mick Jagger.

Born in 1947 in England, Chris got into music at an early age and followed his brother around getting to hear, see and meet all the most exciting artists that were coming up in post War England. We discussed life and music, the war in Ukraine and how Chris has gone from one end of the world to the other, sometimes hitchhiking his way around. How has the music changed, how was life in the Jagger family, how is it to have a brother in the biggest band in the world? How people keep comparing them. And how it was to be a taxi driver.... From Taiwan to the American dream

Lee Chang is a chef and one of the owners of QQ Asian Kitchen, a family style Michelin guide fine dining restaurant in the center of Prague in the Czech Republic.

Lee grew up in Colorado where his parents emigrated from Taiwan to live the American dream. He was supposed to be the pride of the household as the only child. They made him play violin which was not exactly the coolest thing to do in his eyes so he gave that up and then later he surprised them by telling them he wanted to do a degree in English to which they responded "don't you speak english already?"

Through a series of random decisions Lee ended up in Prague where he opened his restaurant.

He told me how it was being the only Asian kid on the block and how Asians are doing as a minority in the US of A. Their history is not held high as the US authorities treated Asians in ways that most people do not know about. We discussed why Asians are so successful and how they are being used as examples of success in ways that might make them targets for hate. Lee explained to me how he used the fact that he was teased for being different as a drive to get better and stronger instead of giving up.

Living away from your home country can be amazing but also can come with challenges, such as language barriers, limited social life, understanding of the public system as well as being met with xenophobic attitudes. The Czech Republic has a very large number of foreigners living there but the society is not set to integrate these people so they feel welcome and valued.

Amanda is from Croatia and she is the founder of Prague Integration. Her idea at the start was to volunteer to support expats that are relocating to the city, helping them find their ways in the system as well as support their social life.

Then Covid came with its draconian measures of lock downs, isolating expats who were already on the fringes of society even more. When you keep humans scared, isolated, tell them not to go out, make them order fast food home and not breathe clean air then that is probably a recipe for disaster and Amanda saw that first hand, people needed help, substance abuse, domestic violence, anxiety, depression etc. all reached unseen levels. So her business went from being a small little volunteer thingy to over 20 consultants in a matter of months which enabled her to leave the corporate world behind and focus only on what she likes. Born in Yonkers New York Isaac's plan was to become a lawyer but he found out that he liked his part time job in a "shitty" bar and grill more than he liked school so he changed course and went to culinary school and then on to work at a Michelin star restaurant in New York City where the love was tough, very tough. He came to Prague for a holiday and got stuck like most expats do, started his business journey there where he ran a successful bar that he later sold. Only to venture on to open a restaurant which went bust and he was left with nothing but a grill and van...so he started a food truck operation taking his truck anywhere that he could find mouths to feed. Who Shot JR?

JR Smith is a venture capitalist, he owns multiple startups, sits on boards of tech companies and has published books on cybersecurity and privacy. JR is also behind Adams Traktor, a music project formed to explore, expand, and in many ways bend the music genres that have influenced progressive modern music.

JR told me about his family background, how he slacked at school and got into DJing and promoting that he spent 12 years doing. During that time the Grunge was getting started in Seattle and he saw all the big names before they were big, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains etc. When the mobile phones were catching on JR got into that industry in the US with zero knowledge but the right attitude and that eventually led him to come to Prague in 1997 to help build up mobile networks in over 10 countries. Then AVG the antivirus company knocked on the door with an opportunity that became a great success story as JR led that company to amazing astronomical growth and eventually a stock exchange listing on NASDAQ 8 years later. Some of the shareholders of AVG got 800 times their investment over the period that JR led the business....a lot of people became very rich. JR explained to me how one makes such success happen, how it is to fire people who do not dance along and what is key to success in his eyes. After leaving AVG JR needed a new mountain to climb so he went back to his passion, music and started the Adams Traktor project where he had to start almost from scratch, learning guitar, learning to sing, learning to write songs and how to work in a studio. Uliana Elina was born in the Soviet Union, she is a true Jackie Of All Trades, she has been a customs officer in Russia, published a metal album, is a mom, former beauty queen, salesperson, translator, teacher, actress and a wedding singer.

Uliana visited my podcast, told me how life was under communism, how her parents kept the surface clean while beneath it all there was violent physical and mental abuse. She wanted to be in music but didn't get any support and being a musician wasn't a "real" job anyway...so the parents won and she graduated with a degree as a customs officer! There was corruption during communism but it didn't stop there, she told me how the customs officers were openly corrupt, how the system in Russia is broken, why we in the West see Russia as an enemy and how she feels the Russian people do not know what they want so they believe in the leader blindly. She wanted to leave so she eventually after a long struggle got a visa to move to Prague, during that time she made her first album with a metal band in Russia. Yoav Haruvizepa is from Israel, he lives and works in Prague. He visited my podcast and explained the different roots of jewish people. The Ashkenazi as he is and the Sephardi jew that have their origins in northern Africa.

He explained me the impact of the holocaust on lives of jewish people, how the nation has processed it to a point that they tell jokes about it. How the holocaust and previous persecutions of jewish people keeps a certain narrative alive that is used to justify the needs to have their own country . These persecutions led to the establishment of Israel but that was not the only possible choice, there were ideas to create a land of the Jews in Uganda! We discussed the Kibbutz which is a type of settlement which is unique to Israel. A collective community, traditionally agrarian. Yoav lived in one of those and even though the idea behind the Kibbutz is kind of "hippie-ish" he was a victim of bullying. This is part 1 of my talk with Yoav. Vanishing twin syndrome refers to a condition that can take place during early or later pregnancy. When more than one embryo appears to be developing in the uterus, it might be that the person is carrying twins. Later though, one of the embryos or fetuses may no longer be detected. The baby that doesn’t develop fully is called the vanishing twin and that can have a big impact on the surviving twinless twin....

Eva Sochorová is one of these twinless twins and it has had a big impact on her whole life.

Eva is a lawyer who studied in Czech Republic and England and worked in European law and legislation for seven years. However she didn't get the satisfaction she thought she would get and embarked on a journey to discover what truly was bothering her and found what was causing her trauma. Her path has never been easy as she was also a victim of sexual abuse which had a big impact on her life.

She told me her story, everything about the Vanishing Twin Syndrome, how she discovered she was a twinless twin, trauma and how the body deals with trauma. And of course how people get on a healing path.

Eva now helps other people with their trauma through her therapy programs.

EP32 The Guitar Hero - Geoff Tyson

Geoff Tyson has lived his life in the music industry since he was 15 years old. Growing up in Berkeley California which was a hotspot for new rock and metal music in the early 80's. There he witnessed the rise of bands such as Metallica, Megadeth and Testament to name a few.

From the age of 13 he was a private student of the legendary guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and Joe later said that two guitarists had "graduated" from him, Geoff and Steve Vai (Whitesnake, David Lee Roth).
At 15 Geoff joined a band called T-Ride that was expected to be the next big thing, their album took over 5 years to make and they got played on MTV, toured around and all was heading for a glorious path of an up and coming band. But then Nirvana happened and overnight the demand for T-Ride's music and Geoff's amazing guitar skills dropped faster than a brick in a swimming pool. And as if that was not bad enough then he lost everything except his guitar in a fire in San Francisco. Despite these setbacks Geoff has made a great career, living from what he loves, as he has toured with bands such as Filter, Nazareth, Queens of the Stone age and Duran Duran! He told me his story, how the music industry has changed and a lot....lot more. Geoff now lives in Prague, Czech Republic where the Geoff Tyson Band has hit the top of the radio charts, and has been playing festivals all over Europe.

Omar Sattar's family emigrated from Pakistan to Scotland where he eventually was born.

He went to University and made a career in real estate that eventually got him to Prague where he currently lives with his family. Omar has had a very interesting journey which has been heavily influenced by his family background and religion. Omar had to hide away from his parents a lot of the things that regular teenagers and young people do, he could not bring home girlfriends that were not Muslims and when he eventually fell in love with his wife it was not easily accepted by his family. On top of that his father was constantly coming up with new business ventures that did not always end very well and resulted in some incidents that affected Omar greatly. These pressures and the constant hiding eventually led to Omar suffering from anxiety and depression that he has been dealing with. Davíð Arnórsson and his business partner opened the Artic Bakehouse in Prague in 2018. Their amazing bakery became an instant hit in the city and they both became icons of their neighborhood. It is not uncommon to hear people refer to them as Mr Loveballs which is a direct translation of a traditional Icelandic pastry ástarpungar.

Davíð is extremely honest and we covered some very interesting topics and amongst other he told me how it was to grow up on a small island south of Iceland, how he was a troublemaker as a kid, how he knew he would become a baker from an early age and about the tragic loss of his brother just a few years ago.
