Hard Hats & Hard Truths: Giving Working Men a Voice on Australian Job Sites

Mental health is still one of the hardest conversations to have on a job site.

In the construction and trades industry, men are expected to be tough, reliable, and to just keep going. Long hours, physical strain, job insecurity, financial pressure, relationship breakdowns, isolation, and legal battles are often treated as part of the job — not something to talk about. For many tradies, labourers, supervisors, and contractors, speaking up can feel risky or pointless.

Hard Hats & Hard Truths was started by Carl Herbison, a construction worker who brings deep, lived experience to the microphone.

This podcast was born out of real life — not theory. Carl has faced mental health challenges, relationship breakdown, financial stress, court systems, and the devastating loss of his daughter. These experiences changed his life and gave him a firsthand understanding of the pain, grief, and isolation many men carry silently while still turning up to work every day.

Hearing the same struggles echoed across job sites made one thing clear: too many men are hurting in silence.

Hard Hats & Hard Truths focuses on honest, unfiltered conversations with men working across Australian job sites. It explores mental health alongside the real-world pressures that sit behind it — separation from partners and children, financial strain, domestic violence orders, family court, loneliness, and the expectation to keep functioning no matter the cost.

What makes this podcast different is where the conversations happen. Episodes are recorded on location, including job sites and real-world environments, not polished studios. The aim is authenticity — conversations that sound like real talk during smoko, in the ute, or after a long day on the tools.

This isn’t about preaching or clinical advice. It’s men talking to men. Sharing lived experiences, lessons learned, mistakes made, and what it truly takes to survive the hardest chapters of life and keep moving forward.

Hard Hats & Hard Truths exists to give working men a voice in a space where they often feel unheard — and to remind them they’re not weak for struggling, not alone in what they’re facing, and not broken for needing support.

Because behind every hard hat is a human being.
And it’s time the hard truths were finally talked about.
