At first, it was the sound of knocking. Then objects started to move. Fires broke out without warning. What began as a private disturbance quickly became something much larger, drawing in neighbours, reporters, and even men described at the time as “scientific gentlemen,” all trying to make sense of what was happening inside the house on Church Street.

Some believed Esther was at the centre of it. Others thought something else was at work entirely.

Over the following months, the case would escalate to the point that Esther herself was brought before the courts - not as a witness, but as the accused.

In this episode, we take a closer look at the Amherst Poltergeist, exploring the events as they were recorded at the time, the people who witnessed them, and the question that still sits at the centre of the case:

what, if anything, was really happening in that house?

But the atmosphere can change after midnight.

Lights are dimmed. Visiting hours end. Activity narrows to smaller teams carrying out the steady work of monitoring, observation, and care through the night.

It’s during those hours that many of the strangest experiences reported by medical staff seem to occur.

In this episode, I share a series of first-hand accounts from people who have worked night shifts in hospitals and care settings across Scotland. These are not hollywood ghost stories, but brief encounters that happened during otherwise ordinary shifts, incidents that stayed with the people who experienced them long after the night ended.

These accounts come from environments defined by pressure, exhaustion, vigilance, and proximity to death. Whether they are the result of stress, suggestion, shared culture, or something more difficult to explain remains open to interpretation.

But across different hospitals and across generations of staff, similar stories continue to come to light.

In this Christmas episode, I explore two Scottish Midwinter hauntings recorded in the nineteenth century, both linked to Christmas and both rooted in firsthand experience rather than folklore built up over time.

The first takes place at the historic Cortachy Castle, where guests and travellers reported hearing unexplained drumming during the Christmas period - a sound the Airlie family believed appeared only when a death in the family was approaching.

The second comes from the Highlands, where villagers spoke of figures seen playing games in the snow near a parish church on Christmas Day, returning year after year as part of a story tied to a specific place and a long-remembered transgression.

She’s a modern case - one that unfolded in real time, among investigators, witnesses, and viewers who found themselves reacting in ways they couldn’t easily explain.

First brought to wider attention in 2015, Peggy became associated with reports of physical and emotional reactions - headaches, nausea, anxiety, and a deep sense of unease - sometimes experienced simply by seeing her, even through a screen. At the centre of the case was paranormal investigator Jayne Harris, known for her careful, methodical approach to unusual claims.

Others sit somewhere between faith, fear, and mental collapse. Through a modern lens, they might be seen as illness or trauma - but at the time, they were believed to be evidence of possession.

These are not Hollywood exorcisms or invented horrors. They’re stranger than that - real moments from Scottish history where belief in the unseen was part of everyday life, and where the line between the spiritual and the psychological was far less clear.

In this opening episode, we travel to Romania to examine the extraordinary story of Elenore Zugun - one of the real-life cases said to have inspired the 1973 film The Exorcist. 

Branded ‘The Devil’s Girl,’ Elenore became, between 1925 and 1927, the centre of one of Europe’s most unsettling and well-documented hauntings. Stones flew, objects moved, and witnesses swore unseen forces were at work. The case has fascinated me for decades, and it sets the tone for the episodes to follow.

As the series continues, The Possession Files will return to Scotland, exploring centuries-old records where possession was more than myth - from documented exorcisms to 16th-century cases that still echo through history.

In this follow-up to my episode on the haunted A75, Dark Miles, I trace the length of the A9, uncovering ghost stories that cling to the road and the landscapes around it. From death omens in Pitlochry and the witch of Beinn a’ Ghlo, to phantom whistles in Glen Tilt and a modern woman in white near Drumossie Brae, the accounts are as varied as they are disturbing.

While the story follows the road north, I also take some detours into places I know well and love to walk — glens, mountains, and old haunts where folklore and personal memory blur. What emerges is not just a road of traffic and tarmac, but one that seems to carry echoes of history, oppression, and tragedy.

In this episode, we explore a haunting said to be tied to one of Scotland’s most infamous court cases: the 1857 trial of Madeleine Smith. Her secret affair with Pierre L’Angelier ended in scandal and death, and although the verdict was “Not Proven,” the questions never truly faded. Nor, it seems, did the presence of those involved.

We look at ghost stories stretching across decades: strange smells, silent corridors, footsteps in locked rooms, and apparitions that appear to walk not just through buildings — but through time itself. Some of the tales link directly to Madeleine’s story. Others seem older, or completely separate, yet share the same unnerving details. A woman in white gliding past closed doors. A child’s scream. A figure in Victorian dress vanishing into a wall.

This is a square shaped as much by memory as by architecture. And whether you believe in ghosts or not, some places leave a mark that doesn’t easily fade.

There are accounts from the east stairwell. Of a woman seen at the top - tall, dressed in white, wringing her hands. They call her the White Lady. She’s been part of the local memory for as long as anyone can remember.

In life she is thought to have been Marion of Dalpeddar, a noblewoman who entered the castle in 1590 and never came out. No burial. No record of her death. Just witness sightings, passed down through the years - until, centuries later, a skeleton was discovered hidden deep within the stone.

This is her story - and the shadow she’s left behind.

The episode also looks at the case of John Wilson, a servant caught between two powerful rivals. He was executed the same year Marion disappeared, and some say his ghost remains.

Move beyond the castle walls and there are more reports of hauntings.

There’s talk of a phantom pedlar still walking the old path near the Deil’s Stone. Witches were said to live in the area and down by Crawick Water, they say a great black dog waits in the dark - watching, unmoving, and not quite real.

In 1889, a remote farmhouse in Clarendon, Quebec became the centre of one of the most unsettling paranormal cases in Canadian history. The Dagg family claimed they were haunted by a presence that moved furniture, tore beds apart, attacked a young girl - and spoke aloud in a deep, gravelly voice.

This wasn’t folk tales. Seventeen people signed formal witness statements. Journalists, neighbours, clergy, and even a spiritualist investigator and famous painter named Percy Woodcock all confirmed something extraordinary was happening. The voice identified itself as the Devil. It mocked, threatened, and asked for forgiveness.

But that was just the beginning.

In this episode, we explore the incredible case of the Dagg Poltergeist.

Three American students, renting a modest flat on Gibson Street, began experiencing something they couldn’t explain - and would never forget. It started with faint, indistinct voices echoing through empty rooms. Then came the sudden crashes, the faulty radio playing on its own, and the sense that they were not alone.

George Heriot's School, possibly an inspiration for Hogwarts, is renowned for its academic excellence and ghost stories. 

Beverly, who worked there in the 1980s, shares her experiences of strange occurrences and ghostly encounters. She describes cold spots, moving objects, and a vase that mysteriously levitated and smashed. Beverly and her colleagues also saw a dark, shadowy figure that felt malevolent but suddenly disappeared.

From ghostly monks, to phantom coaches, this collection of stories features some of my favourite tales from this beautiful and ancient Royal Burgh.

One of these houses, only known as "Number 17" was said to have be home to a haunting so terrible that many believe the property was demolished due to the terrible events that happened there.

Although there are far more horrifying stories in Edinburgh, the authenticity of this tale always struck me: local newspapers were unable to debunk it.

30 years later, when I attended the nearby high school, locals still talked about the poltergeist of Hazeldean Terrace. 

Home to the famous Bowes-Lyon family, Glamis has stood since the 15th century, but has been a site of historical significance for over 1,000 years.

This, of course, means the Castle is haunted, really haunted. In this episode we explore the famous and not so-famous stories of this incredible location.
