Now working at Lower House Equine Clinic, Maddy Baly graduated from Nottingham Vet School in 2025 and had already scoped out a potential career path during her time on EMS. When a job came up in a practice that were 'her' people', the stars started to align. But far from resting on her laurels, Maddy treats every opportunity as a chance to learn. This approach has proved hugely rewarding and demonstrates the potential for enjoying being an equine vet is out there for anyone who wants to go and find it!

BEVApod Life: Veterinary Careers - a journey to anywhere with repro vet Kate Dugher

Kate wasn't sure she wanted to be a vet and without the required subjects for traditional course entry, she embarked on Nottingham's 'prelim' course. She took her time exploring options with mixed practice, first opinion equine, before undertaking an internship. Following this she used her 'veterinary passport' to make the most of seeing the worlds and has settled for an antipodean life as a repro vet... for now! Currently she is working towards her Diploma with the American College of Theriogenologists via the alternate pathway, and has hopes for furthering assisted reproductive techniques in New Zealand's South Island.

Following on from the publication of BEVA's Schedule 3 guidelines in 2023, Marie and the BEVA Nurse Committee have been working hard with Jim Green at BARTA to understand the role of the equine RVN in emergency rescue situations. The new guidelines being published jointly by BEVA and BARTA aim to highlight the role of the RVN during these high stress and challenging situations to further improve animal welfare, client communication and team work with other professionals. It is hoped that these guidelines will help to empower RVNs to utilise their skills and develop new and rewarding roles within the equine veterinary profession.

This year Professor Chris Proudman published the first paper to demonstrate associations between a foal’s gut microbiome and its future athletic performance and its future respiratory health. The emerging fields of the "omics" has been one of the most exciting branches of science in recent years. Whilst we're a little way off understanding exactly how to capitalise on this in practice, it's already evident that interventions such as antibiotics and probiotics could potentially have far-reaching impacts on future health and performance.

Farrier and Honorary Associate of the RCVS, Simon Curtis, talks to us about 'The Foot' stream at Congress this year, which takes place on the Saturday. The wealth of knowledge and skill which will be brought together looks to revolutionise how we tackle not only clinical conditions but how we view farriery as a way to help prevent various common causes of lameness. Nic talks us through the protectMEtoo toolkit and how it now provides every vet with access to the essential, evidence-based, digestible (you can read this stuff in the time it takes to drink a coffee!) information that they need to know to help their clients and save these medicines for the future.

Paddy Gordon, owner of a mixed practice and farm vet, discusses his observations and experience in vet recruitment and retention. Increasing student numbers are coming through University but equine and farm need to be given sufficient opportunity and encouragement to allow students to select these careers. Paddy will highlight how practitioners can help students with early experience as well as support students most effectively through EMS. Championing success has also been important in developing the Farm Vet of the Future competition. Paddy has 30 years experience in practice and is working with Bristol and Surrey vet schools.

Whether it's handling dangerous drugs or working with unhandled yearlings, as veterinary surgeons we take calculated risks daily. After becoming pregnant with her first child, Emily identified a need for clear and concise guidance for veterinarians navigating pregnancy and parenting in clinical practice. After researching the information for herself, she decided to write a book to help new mothers make evidence based decisions about their work practices. Her book is called "Pregnancy and Postpartum Considerations for the Veterinary Team", and she now offers 'Ultimate Parenting Road Map' workshops in addition to one-to-one mentoring on the subject. Council Member, Angela Jones, joins us to discuss how planning ahead where possible, and having access to the relevant information helps ease the stresses and strains of trying to manage work-life and family-life during those early days in the process.

Law graduate, Justine Couret, is currently halfway through a veterinary degree at Tartu University in Estonia. When the head of the university equine clinic, Felipe Corrêa, suggested she and three of her fellow students created an equine association for veterinary students, they took the bull by the horns and set up 'Hyraco'. Through this they hope to improve accessibility to equine careers for all students, from clinical placements to gaining experience within the various aspects of the wider equestrian industry. They believe that the equine field offers many opportunities, which are often overlooked, and hope to work with BEVA and other equine associations to bring those to the forefront for all students.

BEVApod Life: Being patient, changing tack and making the most of what you have with Lorna Brokenshire-Dyke

Lorna went to vet school as a mature student, and did what she could to accelerate her learning and gaining of experience. After 2 internships and ambulatory work she had to change tack to locuming, in order to raise her twin boys, one of whom was disabled and underwent major surgery in the USA. Identifying a need to be flexible in her work, she has since gone on to train as an equine physiotherapist as a parallel career to a part-time ambulatory vet role. Never short of ambition and determination, Lorna recognises that all this has been possible thanks to her network of support forged throughout life. When asked what the future holds, she was happy to report she intends to hit cruise control, and enjoy what she has.

Behavioural change is key to not only improving our clinical success as vets, in terms of patient outcomes and owner compliance, but it can also improve the welfare of the animals we serve, create positive experiences for our clients, and facilitate enjoyment and job satisfaction for us as vets and nurses. Clinical skills are not all that is required of us. The behaviour skills, both equine and human, are what makes us able to effect what we know and make long-term changes for the better.

BEVApod Life: Riding the ups and downs equine practice with Maisie Parsons

Maisie graduated a year ago and entered first opinion equine practice with all the knowledge she gained at vet school, but no prior equine industry experience and having not passed a nasogastric tube and having never 'rectalled' a colic. The learning curve was steep, but she recognised that many 'day one skills' in equine are not so routine that you must manage them alone, and that it's ok to stop and ask for help. Knowing when to seek help is a sign of development, not failure, and balancing this with growing your own self-confidence is key to enjoying any career, but never more applicable than to equine ambulatory practice. Fully expecting the ups and downs all new grads will experience, Maisie rode the rollercoaster of her first year with the help of friends, family and a supportive practice, and is now setting her sights on the next stage of her career as an equine vet.
