Eating healthy is a struggle for many. Adding to the confusion about what to eat is advice from self-titled fitness influencers on social media. So how can physicians help patients navigate this complex situation? People often want to try what’s trending on the internet without fully understanding whether it would be healthy for them?

Thomas Kim, MD, host of A Better Question, speaks with Vincent Fonseca, MD, about how he helps his patients eat healthily. Dr. Fonseca specializes in public health and general preventive medicine and was a member of TMA’s Council on Science and Public Health – as is Dr. Kim.

“We're not making lots of changes,” Dr. Fonseca says he tells his patients. “We're making one small change at a time. That is the secret to success.”

One point he makes is he encourages his patients to eat more, even though this might go against conventional wisdom. The key is that he only gives them healthy choices, so they feel more satiated.

To help clear the confusion, the Texas Medical Association (TMA) launched new podcast called A Better Question. Hosted by Thomas Kim, MD, an Austin psychiatrist and member of TMA’s Council on Science and Public Health, physicians share stories about the challenges facing their patients and themselves and how they explore better questions to seek answers leading us all to better health.
